AWAKENING OF INSECTS · #3 Solar Term

Awakening of Insects

3月5-7日 Solar Longitude 345° Spring #3 Solar Term

A thunderclap awakens creatures, spring plowing begins anew

Jingzhe, the third of the twenty-four solar terms, marks the beginning of mid-spring. Falling on March 5-7 each year when the sun reaches 345° of ecliptic longitude, Jingzhe literally means "awakening of insects." The character "Jing" (惊) signifies awakening, while "Zhe" (蛰) refers to dormancy. Jingzhe represents the moment when spring thunder stirs and awakens the insects that have been hibernating underground.

During Jingzhe, spring energy stirs and nature displays a vibrant landscape of vitality. The weather becomes warmer, and spring thunder begins to rumble. Animals that entered hibernation in winter, living dormant underground without eating or drinking (called "zhe"), are awakened by the spring thunder—this is the essence of "Jingzhe." At this time, most regions of China enter the spring planting season, and the fields bustle with activity.

"A thunderclap awakens snakes and insects from their sleep,
Scattered showers tinge the air with deep purple and red.
In ninefold Jiangnan the spring wind brings its warmth,
Green fields thaw and spring plowing at last begins."

"Fine rain nourishes the myriad herbs anew,
One thunderbolt marks the start of Jingzhe's reach.
